A man who got into a fight with his partner’s ex has been ordered to carry out unpaid work.

James Potter (30) got into the altercation with the other man outside the Morrisons supermarket in Inverness’s Millburn Road on June 9 of last year.

Fiscal depute Sophie Marshall told Sheriff Sara Matheson at Inverness Sheriff Court: “The witness attended the locus to meet with their ex-partner and the accused was inside the car.

“The accused then came to provide support when they exchange became heated and both the complainer and accused threw punches.

“Potter repeatedly punched him on the body and caused him to fall to the ground and pushed him against railings and pinned him against the wall.

“The complainer had fractures to his ribs and spine.”

Potter, of Glendoe Terrace, Inverness, pleaded guilty to assault.

Sheriff Matheson ordered him to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work within six months.

Potter’s defence solicitor, David Patterson, said: “The conflict had been building for a long time and both have been prosecuted.

“While injuries were serious, it was in the heat of the moment and not planned.

“He is remorseful and does not see himself as a violent man and is shocked at his behaviour.”
