A lobster fisherman who was stopped by police on the A9 had too much cannabis in his system making him unfit to drive.

James Ross, of Sinclair Drive, Wick admitted the offence and was fined £640 and disqualified from driving for a year.

Sheriff Gary Aitken heard that officers intercepted Ross’s car on May 16 last year at North Kessock because it had been speeding.

They then detected a strong smell of cannabis.

A test revealed that the 37-year-old had almost twice the amount of a cannabis metabolyte in his system than is safe to drive.

His reading was 3.5mcgs when the limit is 2mcgs.

Defence solicitor Rory Gowans said: "He is the author of his own misfortune. The loss of his licence will cause him some difficulties for his work.

"He had been helping a friend make deliveries and had smoked cannabis the day before.

"The other matter was dealt with by a fixed penalty which he accepted."
