Street lighting is set to be installed at the notorious Munlochy junction on the A9.
It follows a public consultation considering various improvements on the stretch of trunk road between North Kessock and Tore roundabout.
Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch MSP Kate Forbes welcomed confirmation that Transport Scotland is to install street lighting at Munlochy Junction in what is hoped to be the first of a series of road safety improvements at the renowned trouble spot.
Transport Scotland also told the MSP it will be reviewing active travel facilities around Tore roundabout as well as the speed limit on the roundabout and all approaches.
The developments come as WSP consultants published the results of its recent public consultation report, which contained a list of short, medium and long-term options.
The same consultants are also progressing a preliminary appraisal study which is expected to be published by the end of next month.
Ms Forbes has been a prolific campaigner for road safety improvements to the Munlochy Junction, and her initial survey – which attracted almost 2500 responses – helped kickstart Transport Scotland’s own investigations.
"Throughout this process I have consistently urged Transport Scotland to implement any ‘quick wins’ as soon as possible, so I am pleased that they are actively progressing the installation of street lighting around Munlochy junction," she said.
"It is a measure which carries significant consensus across the Black Isle, and I hope it will make a difference, particularly as we head into the darker winter months.
"I do recognise that this will not impact near misses during the day – but I hope there will be other improvements for the junction announced soon, even if they take slightly longer to implement."
She added: "It’s also good news that active travel routes facilities will be reviewed around Tore roundabout.
"Anyone who has ever tried to cross the four lanes of dual carriageway will know how difficult it can be, and the idea of a footbridge across this section is one that carries popular support.
"I hope Transport Scotland will be able to identify further opportunities to improve the route here."
