The Lib Dem candidate in the upcoming Inverness West by-election has described the city as being at a “crucial moment” in the recovery from the Covid pandemic.
Originally from Canada, Colin Aitken has lived and worked in the Highlands since 2015 and has made Inverness his home.
“I love Inverness – the people here have been so welcoming,” he said. “However huge challenges, such as opportunities for young people and the impact of Covid-19, mean this is a crucial moment for our area.
“The pandemic will change our city forever. We need big ideas and urgent action to rise to the challenge.
“From giving young people the chance to build their lives here, to rebuilding the city from Covid ready for the future, we can renew Inverness to become a thriving, green and affordable place to live and work.
“I am very excited to work with Councillor Alex Graham to make sure we get the best deal for Inverness West.”
Cllr Graham, already a Lib Dem member for the Inverness West ward, said: “I’m delighted Colin Aitken has been selected as our candidate for this by-election. I know that Colin has the commitment and the drive to work hard for our community.
“We face a pivotal moment as we seek to plan our recovery from Covid-19 and Colin has the energy and ideas we need to reshape Inverness for the better.”
Scottish Lib Dem leader Willie Rennie said: “Colin is a fantastic candidate and really cares about the local area here. If elected on August 12, I know that he and Councillor Alex Graham will make a good strong team for Inverness West.
“This is looking to be a close race.
“Scottish Liberal Democrats are resilient and we will keep fighting for our communities, so even if you’ve never voted Lib Dem before, take a chance on Colin in this by-election and see what we can do for you.”
Other candidates: Max Bannerman (Conservative), Iain Forsyth (Independence for Scotland Party), Calum Liptrot (Scottish Libertarian Party), Kate MacLean (SNP), Ryan Mackintosh (Greens) and Duncan MacDonald (Independent).
