A BURST pipe has been leaking water for so long in Inverness city centre it has become a fun feature.

A steady stream of water has been coming up through the surface of Market Close for about six weeks and now some humorous hand-written signs have appeared to the amusement of passers-by.

The first sign was “Fishing Permits, Apply Within” complete with a little figure holding a fishing rod. Then there was a sign declaring “No Swimming,” soon to be joined by several plastic ducks.

“The leak has been there for weeks now,” said barmaid Mel Gordon of the adjacent Market Bar. “People have been stopping to take photos.”

Hayley Macintyre manageress of Georgeous hair and beauty salon said: “The water is running back to our wall below the window of the waiting area.

“It definitely is getting worse and I think the surface is starting to subside. I’m worried that a wheelchair might fall through if it is being undermined below the pavement. My boss Lynn MacKenzie has reported it to Scottish Water.”

At The Malt Room whisky bar a member of staff said: “No one seems to want to take responsibility for it. We have reported it. It is just a puddle at the moment but the worry is that it might cave in.”

A Scottish Water spokeswoman said: “We were made aware of the leak and after investigation the source was found to be from a section of pipe that is the responsibility of a private business. Repairs have been carried out at this location in the past on a good will basis, but we have explained to the owner that they will need to pay for any future repair required. We are continuing to work with the owner to ensure a repair is completed.”
