Kop that! Superfan from Inverness heads off to Madrid for Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur
IS this Inverness businessman the north’s biggest Liverpool fan?
Iain ‘Tosh’ MacKintosh certainly appears to be in a league of his own when it comes to supporting his beloved Reds. He even has a three-quarter size replica of the Champions League trophy – and might see his side lift the real thing tonight.
Mr MacKintosh and partner Elaine flew out to Madrid on Thursday ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur in Europe’s major football club competition.
It is not exactly a novelty for Mr Mackintosh, who has a scaffolding business in the city and Ardtower Caravan Park just off Culloden Road. He has been a fan for 40 years and has been to all five of Liverpool’s European cup victories.
Mr MacKintosh (55) became a fan after a cousin from Wales gave him a Liverpool scarf.
He said: “I started following them back when Bill Shankly was manager and then all through the Kenny Dalglish glory years.
"Even when we were in the doldrums between 2007 and 2012, I still went to the games."
Another measure of his love of Liverpool is that his works van has the number plate KOP 17E, after the Anfield ground's famous stand. Row 17 is where he has his regular seat.
Among Mr Macintosh's luggage is his large banner emblazoned with "Scottish Blood, Scouse Heart" reminding the opposition that Liverpool have won the cup on no less than five occasions – 1977, 1978, 1981, 1984, and 2005.
