INVERNESSIAN Hollywood star Karen Gillan has voiced her interest in playing DC Comics superhero Batgirl in a movie adaptation, she has said.

Her response came during an interview for the Brazilian entertainment website Omelete.com, when she was asked which superhero she would like to play, if given the chance.

The actress, who already boasts impressive comic book credentials thanks to her role as anti-hero Nebula in the Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers blockbusters, floated the idea of also taking on the part of Batman’s crime-fighting ally.

"Batgirl would be pretty cool! Yeah, she's a redhead!” she said.

A movie adaptation of Batgirl - who is perhaps most famously associated with the alter-ego of Barbara Gordon but is also linked to a number of other DC characters - is currently in very early development.

Ms Gillan, who wowed critics in 2018 with her feature length directorial debut The Party’s Just Beginning - which was partly filmed in Inverness - was also asked which superhero project she’d love to step behind the camera and direct.

"Batgirl would be cool for that, as well," she replied. "My favourite film in that world, my favourite one is [2008’s The] Dark Knight. I just love the way that one is directed so much. So, I would just love to work in that world as a director. Come on DC. Look over this way!"

Avengers Assemble, Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer legend Joss Whedon had been set to write and direct a Batgirl movie adaptation, but dropped out of the project almost two years ago.

There has been no further news on the project since April 2018, when a new writer was tapped to draft a screenplay.

No director is currently attached although Warner Brothers, which overseas the DC universe, is understood to be keen on the idea of a female director.
