It would all be Greek to your average Post Office customer in Inverness.

In fact, the bilingual Covid-19 ‘stay safe’ sign adorning the entrance window at the busy Queensgate city centre branch has been part-written in Welsh.

The bemusing choice of language in Gaelic territory 500 miles north of the Welsh capital Cardiff caught the eye of Inverness-based book publishers Ablekids Press.

Writing on her Facebook page, Pauline Mackay, owner of the independent publisher of children’s and Gaelic books, said: “Here at Ablekids Press we are all in favour of bilingualism and encouraging language learning, but we have to laugh at the English/Welsh poster on the door of The General Post Office in Inverness.

“Has anyone else noticed this and are there any others out there in Scotland? Does a Post Office in Wales have a Scottish Gaelic version?”

Amused Ms Mackay alerted Post Office staff. It is not known if any of our Celtic cousins in The Valleys are currently puzzling over the phrases Fuirich sàbhailte and Cùm d’ astar – Stay Safe and Keep Your Distance.

However, a Post Office spokeswoman said: “We apologise for the wee error. Normally Inverness Post Office receives posters in English only.

“On this occasion it received a bilingual poster in English and Welsh in error, but the poster went up as it had an important message about social distancing.”
