Motorists say a new swing bridge to the west of the city is failing to help ease traffic congestion.

That's the view of countless road users who have contacted The Courier in frustration.

The West Link project, that includes Torvean Swing Bridge, was meant to operate in tandem with the existing Tomnahurich swing bridge to allow for the free flow of vehicle traffic on the A82, while boats pass through one or other of the bridges.

Operation of the bridges is managed from a new control building located on the canal side between the two bridges.

There will normally be two routes available for vehicles to cross the canal and vehicles will be diverted over one or other bridge, only while the other is open to allow boat passage.

But readers have been venting their frustration that things on the road seem to be worse, rather than better.

The multi-million project was officially opened at the end of June, with Highland Council and contractors RJ McLeod saying the new Torvean Swing Bridge was open to traffic.

But that is not how readers are finding the area, with motorists saying things are worse than ever. Tell us what you think in our poll below.

When asked, a spokesman for Highland Council said: "The new swing bridge is now in service and is operated by Scottish Canals.

"There have been some minor issues that have arisen now that the new bridge is in service, and these are related to the operation of the bridge in automatic mode and manual mode.

"Minor modifications continue to be undertaken – to provide greater resilience in the use of automatic mode which requires only one operative – it is hoped that this process will be completed in the near future.

"The new bridge has demonstrated the real benefits that the tandem bridge offers – and it is hoped that this can be fully realised in the near future."
