The Post Office in Nairn could be transferred to a local newsagent, with the current branch being managed by a temporary postmaster.

The retail post office company has now launched a consultation on proposals to move the service into Strachans of Nairn on the High Street — about 130 metres from its current location on Cawdor Road.

According to the company, the move will bring a significant extension of more than 13 hours to its opening times (which are expected to be Monday to Friday between 9am and 5.30pm and Saturday between 9am and 1pm), and the vast majority of services currently offered being retained.

A Post Office Spokesperson said: “The current branch at Cowdor Street, Nairn, IV12 4QD, is operated on our behalf by a temporary postmaster. Whilst this arrangement has enabled us to maintain access to Post Office services to our customers in the area, we have been looking for a permanent solution to safeguard services to the community in the longer term.

“A new permanent operator has been appointed who has identified an alternative location to operate Nairn Post Office at Strachans Newsagents subject to consutlation.

“The premises would undergo a refurbishment to incorporate two low-screened Post Office counters alongside the retail counter.”

According to information provided by the post office, the only service that would be lost in the move would be the provision of travel insurance (with foreign currency exchange and travel money card services being retained).

Personal and business banking services — such as cash withdrawals and deposits and cheques — as well as identity services, passport applications, pay bills and top up will all be retained in the new location.

Restidents are being encouraged to take part in the public consultation, which is set to run until June 19.
