Inverness will not get the title of Lord Provost after an unsuccessful in its £3500 bid on the occasion of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Inverness has been unsuccessful in its £3500 bid to gain the title of Lord Provost for the city on the occasion of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Highland Council made the application hoping to put Inverness on a par with other Scottish cities with Lord Provosts like Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

A council spokeswoman confirmed that the application had been turned down.

She added: “It was an honour to enter into this prestigious international competition marking Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations as the first British monarch to reach 70 years on the throne.”

There were some misgivings among Inverness councillors about whether this was the best use of the cash with £2500 coming from the Inverness Common Good Fund and a further £1000 from the infrastructure and environment budget.

At the time, the Inverness city manager David Haas said: “This would not have any impact on the role of the Lord Lieutenant for Inverness-shire, who would remain the Queen’s representative.

“The additional title would act to enhance the profile of the city and that of the Highlands in the context of Inverness having the same status as other leading cities within Scotland.”

The city will still have a provost.
