An Inverness man whose court case was dropped then went on to try and steal from a car and frighten its 80 year old owner.

At Inverness Sheriff Court yesterday, 29 year old Michael Bradshaw of Telford Street, appeared by video link from Inverness Prison and admitted attempted theft and threatening behaviour.

The incidents happened in Innes Street on June 22 this year close to Inverness Justice Centre.

Defence solicitor Willie Young told Sheriff Robert Frazer that a case against his client due at the court was deserted.

"He fell into the company of individuals outside and he was given diazepam. He remembers very little after that.

"He has struggled with drug and alcohol abuse all his adult life but has not previously had a drug treatment and testing order.

"He did not know the householder or her age and when he was confronted by her, he was asked to leave and he did.

"He accepts it must have been distressing for the lady." Mr Young added.

Fiscal depute Martina Eastwood told the court that Bradshaw was obviously intoxicated when he was seen trying a vehicle's door handle several times.

"He then turned into an alley which led to the rear of the properties and went into a back garden.

"The occupier had left her door open because it was a nice day and saw him enter. He then went into the kitchen, she heard a noise and went downstairs.

"She saw him rummaging around and when asked to leave, he put an item he was holding down, mumbled something and left." Ms Eastwood went on.

Sheriff Frazer rejected a DTTO option, commenting that the incident involving the 80 year old was "particularly disturbing".

He jailed Bradshaw for six months, backdated to June 23.
