AN Inverness man who called the police to say he had thoughts of murdering or torturing people will be supervised by social workers for the next two years.

Hamish Gibson, of Warrand Road, who had been psychiatrically examined three times, was assessed again while a background report on him was prepared after he was released on bail.

Inverness Sheriff Court had been told that there “did not seem to be a danger to the public.”

The court heard that the 33-year-old had been remanded in custody since January 6 – the day after the offence he admitted of threatening behaviour in Church Street, Inverness, and elsewhere.

He was released during the Covid-19 lockdown at the end of April.

Fiscal depute Robert Weir told the court that Gibson used his mobile phone to call the police on January 6.

“He stated that he had thoughts of murdering people. He was thinking about getting someone by surprise and stabbing them and if they live after that, then tying them up and torturing them for fun.”

Police on foot patrol were advised of the call, but instructed not to approach Gibson until a full risk assessment was carried out, Mr Weir added.

But Gibson approached police and he was subsequently detained.

Defence solicitor advocate Shahid Latif said that the phone call to the emergency services “had been a cry for help”.

Mr Latif added: “He was mentally unwell when these outrageous comments were made. But his motivation was to get help and he was never going to carry out these threats.”

When sentencing, Sheriff Gary Aitken said: “I have seen the very helpful and detailed reports from the psychiatrist and the social work team, so I am willing to impose a community-based disposal.”
