An Inverness cafe has been the victim of a hate crime once again.

XOKO Bakehouse was targeted over the weekend with its Progress Pride flag being ripped down and the building being spat on.

A popular venue on Bridge Street, the cafe owned by Fernando Basaldua Bazaldua and Tristan Aitchison prides itself on offering a safe and inclusive space for everyone.

Speaking about the incident Tristan said: “This is the first incident since January but it’s happened so many times now.

“We do believe that Inverness is an inclusive city and that there are many other LGBTQ+ friendly cafes throughout, however, there is a small minority of people insistent on spreading hate.

“Our customers are incredible and we’ve received so many messages of support.”

Tristan is adamant that the cafe will continue to provide a safe and inclusive place for others, with plans for another Progress Pride flag to be displayed outside this evening.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “An investigation is under way after police received a report of a theft and vandalism at a café in Bridge Street, Inverness. The incident occurred on Saturday, 12 October, 2024. Officers are treating the incident at a hate crime and enquiries are ongoing.”
