Charleston Gala Fun Day always enjoys a good turnout from the community.

Organisers of an upcoming Gala Fun Day at Charleston Academy are looking forward to the day being “the best ever Gala Fun Day we have held”.

The Charleston Gala Fun Day will be held at Charleston Academy Community Complex on Saturday. Starting at noon, it will run for four hours and feature a large number of events and entertainment.

Local groups and organisations will be present with stalls, tombolas, raffles and other fundraising activities, as well as groups providing information and support to local people.

Theme for the year is to be the “1960s and 1970s”, and the event will be especially poignant as it is in memory of the late local councillor and community education worker Graham Ross.

Mr Ross was a founder member of the Gala, youth worker and community education worker at Charleston for almost 30 years, and then a local councillor. He passed away in 2023.

Chairperson of the event Caroline Keiro-Kirk said: “We are all looking forward to a great day and hoping for a large attendance from the local community and further afield.

“It will be an interesting and exciting day, with bouncy castles, a Bungee Run, Mascot Madness dance schools, ju-jitsu demonstrations, and lots of stalls.

“Also, music, a barbecue and R&Bs Disco with Rebecca providing plenty of entertainment.”

She added: “The event is dedicated to the memory of Graham Ross, who served the local community for 40 years as a youth worker and latterly a popular Independent local councillor.

“We are particularly pleased some members of his family can be present at the event.”

Local councillor Alex Graham said: “Graham Ross made a tremendous contribution to the local community, and it is marvellous to see that being recognised at the Gala Day.

“The organising group have made a huge effort to make the Gala Fun Day happen and they are to be commended for that. I am looking forward to the day very much.”
