A project to install street art in the Merkinch area of Inverness is set to receive grant funding which will help move it on to the next phase.

The community council for what is considered a deprived area of the city, applied to the Highland Council administered Common Good Fund for £5,000 assistance and were awarded £4,700 by the common good sub-committee under its “poverty and inequality” category.

This recommendation will go before the council’s Inverness City Committee on Monday when it will most likely be approved.

Those behind the project are anxious to see young people becoming actively involved in the art work which will adorn the area eventually once plans have been finalised.

Anne Sutherland the secretary of Merkinch Community Council said: “We are still in the process of doing planning for the project which we hope to start in October.

“We have to engage with the local community, confirm artists, locations, participants, and so on.”
