A new laboratory is to be constructed next to the An Lochran building at Inverness Campus.

According to a design and access statement, which was submitted to support the application, the project consists of an extension of the processing labs currently located in an area of the building which the college has a three-year lease on.

The statement said: “With there being potential for a non-renewal of the lease, it is considered a practical choice to invest in a portable facility for this extension.

“This will enable the facility to be moved in the event of a non-renewal and represents a practical forward-looking investment of funds.

“It will utilise an area of hard standing currently associated with the existing labs. The facility will be used by the current research team.”

The lab will adhere to design guidelines set out for ancillary buildings and will have horizontal larch cladding and a dark sheet metal roof.

Any fencing will be similar to that which currently exists at the site, so it blends in.

An enclosed area at the front will be used to store gas. This will also be screened off and trees will be planted around it.

The statement explained: “This ensures the proposed facility extension will be substantially hidden from general view.

“All plant and services will be also covered and hidden with screening where appropriate.”
