Inverness city centre set for new ‘cafe for the curious’
Inverness is about to welcome a fresh and exciting addition to its hospitality scene with the launch of Ember Kafe - a new venture from 26-year-old Azhar Khan.
Set to open this week on Queensgate, Ember Kafe promises to be more than just a café—it aims to be a hub for connection, creativity, and sensory experiences.
Azhar Khan, whose background includes advising businesses, is now channelling his expertise and passion into his own innovative concept.
Based in the former Whisk Away premises, Ember Kafe is designed to cater to the evolving needs of modern hospitality, particularly post-lockdown, with a focus on creating an immersive environment that engages all the senses.
"Hospitality has changed a lot since lockdown and we have to look at new ways to adapt to people and their behaviours," Mr Khan explained.
"This business is crafted for people like me. It's about techno music and a sensory experience — high beats per minute, vibrant colours, intriguing smells, and interactive games."
Mr Khan, who identifies as neurodivergent and has ADHD, which he describes as a substitute ability, feels that current venues in the area don’t offer the kind of stimulation and comfort he seeks. His vision for Ember Kafe is provide a space that resonates with those who might also be seeking a unique, engaging environment.
The café will not only offer a diverse menu but in the future will also feature public comedy open mic nights and game nights to enhance the evening experience.
Mr Khan said: "We’re not catering to the masses but to people who are looking for something different.
"The games are there to keep people engaged while they wait and to foster a sense of community and fun."
Ember Kafe aims to be a place for the curious, where customers are encouraged to explore and discover what the café has to offer.
“Take a risk and come down”, he said, “ the worst thing that will happen is you won’t like the place."
With a team of three front-of-house staff, himself, and one chef, with plans to add another, Mr Khan is enthusiastic about the opportunity to bring his authentic self to this venture.
His experience working with leaders in the hospitality industry has equipped him with valuable insights, which he is excited to apply in his own establishment.
Looking ahead, Mr Khan envisions expanding his business ventures in Inverness, aiming to create a network of venues that embody the same ethos of putting people at the heart of the business.
"Ember is about starting a flame, not just in terms of business, but in providing a true sense of worth with people at the core," he said.
Ultimately, Khan's goal for Ember Kafe is to remain true to his passion for hospitality and create a space that genuinely reflects who he is.
He concluded: “I want this to be authentically me and make it my full self.”
