MEMBERS of the Scottish Youth Climate Strike are staging a demonstration in Inverness City centre on Saturday to mark the 5th anniversary of the Paris Agreement on climate change.

May Armstrong, a volunteer for Scottish Youth Climate Strike, said their event would be staged next the farmers' market site on the High Street from 11am to 2pm on December 12.

Miss Armstrong (17) said: "The Paris Agreement was signed in April 2016 with the aim to keep global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

"This was done through Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). Prime Minister Boris Johnson will join a virtual climate pledges summit on December 12.

"The initial round of NDCs announced at the Paris Agreement signing in 2015 was insufficient to fulfil the Paris Agreement’s goal of reducing global temperature rise to below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels."

She added: "An analysis by Cambridge Econometrics suggests Mr Johnson’s 10-point plan, which will form a significant part of the country’s NDC, will only reduce emissions 59% per cent by 2030, based on 1990 levels. It says they should really fall by 70% by that date.

"Scottish Youth Climate Strike’s event is a response to the lack of urgency the British government has to tackle the climate crisis and to push for Britain to fight for 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels."

On Saturday volunteers will read out speeches written by young Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and interview members of the public about the climate crisis.

A banner will be displayed with the slogan #fightfor1point5.
