VARIOUS charities in and around Inverness have been working hard to help people through the lockdown when demand was never higher.

From national organisations to individuals doing their bit for the community, everybody pulled together helping where it was needed.

Colin Craig, the vice-chairman of Inverness BID, said charities in the area were helping residents and added: “They are all doing important work and we would be lost without them. They are providing a very important service to hundreds of users.

“The city centre is not just about businesses, it is about the community and how the whole community interacts. It is important what charities are doing – particularly in these difficult times when people are looking for support.”

When a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) for NHS staff was highlighted, a number of individuals and collectives across the Highlands used their 3D printers to produce items such as face visors – the initiative was well supported with donations of both raw materials and cash from members of the public.

Ness Bank Church’s Inverness Foodstuff was this month praised for its service to the community during the pandemic.

The charity provides meals for the homeless, vulnerable or financially disadvantaged, and it was thanked in the Scottish Parliament.

Many causes are now hoping to make up for a shortfall in income through their high street charity shops that stayed closed due to lockdown restrictions.

They are the visible face of many charities, as well as a vital source of funds, and the ideal place for customers to bag a bargain.
