Loyal and supportive clients throughout the Covid crisis have helped ease any concerns for Caoimhe Simpson, proprietor of Timeless Spa and Beauty Salon

Q: How would you describe your business to a stranger?

A Timeless on the Market Brae Steps is a boutique-style, spa and beauty salon where I provide a tailor-made service to make each client feel special and receive a five-star experience.

I offer a personal and comprehensive range of treatments in a welcoming, safe and confidential environment from basic to 90-minute sessions as well as spa treatments like tanning, waxing, nails, eyebrows, eyelash extensions and body and facial massage.

Q: What inspired you to start the business?

A I am passionate about beauty treatments and I wanted to set up my own salon to create a haven for clients leading busy lifestyles to relax and unwind and make it inclusive for all ages and genders – in fact, I have many male clients who are more comfortable coming to a small salon.

I have had great support from BID and the neighbouring businesses here in establishing Timeless in 2017 and moving it forward.

Q: How has your business developed?

A I am approaching the end of my fourth year in business and I’m at capacity most of the time. The client following I have built up has allowed me to move into larger premises – still on Market Brae Steps with nearby parking.

The premises became available to lease during the Covid restrictions, and I just knew it was the right thing to do despite the difficult times. I moved in November and my new salon is spacious and allows me to offer more services including a pedicure chair and a complete tan room with wet wall.

Q: How are you moving forward post the Covid-19 pandemic?

A Covid was extremely challenging. I went from working a 65-hour week to not working during the lockdowns. But I have taken lots of positives from the experience as well.

It has taught me to have more of a work-life balance and I realised the business is actually in a strong position moving forward.

Before, I was always worrying about what could happen. Then I was closed for eight months in total out of the year, but since I reopened, Timeless is busier than it has ever been. My clients have just been so loyal and supportive through the Covid crisis.

I continue to keep up to date with new trends and offer new services. I have all Covid-safe measures in place which is an investment I am happy to make, and clients are understanding about the need for screens and masks.

I am also looking to rent out my beauty room and nail bar on certain days to offer an opportunity for somebody who is self-employed.

Q: What lessons have you learnt from your time in business?

A Expect the unexpected – and don’t panic when it happens.

It’s hard not to go into a frenzy or meltdown of worry but take some time, process the information and come up with action to make things better. Try and keep a positive outlook.

Q: What’s your vision for Inverness city centre?

A I am eager to see how the Victorian Market development is going to turn out as it has huge potential. The castle project will be great for the tourist trade, which is so important for boosting footfall.

Q: Tell us something interesting about yourself?

A I am a singer and have some performances on Facebook. But my new hobby, which I took up during lockdown, is to paddleboard and open water swim. A couple of times a week I plunge into a local loch.
