Four-year-old Lexie Forsyth is an inspiration for the way she has coped with a serious health condition.

Last August Lexie was diagnosed with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.

She suffered seizures, vomiting and high temperatures and became unable to sit up, stand or walk.

She had no hand-eye co-ordination, became non-verbal and needed to use a wheelchair.

Originally from Caithness she was airlifted from hospital there to Raigmore because of the seriousness of her condition she was taught how to use a walking frame and then an independent walking aid.

Altogether she spent four and half months in hospital but when she was discharged in December was able to walk out unaided.

Lexie wore her best dress for the awards ceremony, which dad Mark admitted: "She’s been excited about wearing for weeks."

The award is fitting testament to Lexie’s character, resilience and determination and her dad added: “For Lexie to be recognised it just shows how proud everyone is of her and how she’s continuing to progress.”

Mum Emilia Blanaru said: “I’m happy that she’s recovering. She has been through a lot so she is really brave.

“She’s doing amazing, she’s quite stubborn so she won’t give up, so that’s the good thing.”

Lexie attends nursery at Dalneigh Primary School and is still undergoing regular tests and MRI scans to monitor her condition.

A lover of unicorns and rainbows her favourite thing about her award is the star on top!
