Incident closes A9 in both directions near the Golden Bridge in Inverness

An incident at the Golden Bridge has closed the A9 dual-carriageway in both directions with long tailbacks of traffic forming.

Police and ambulance were on scene at the roadside not long after 7am today. The Golden Bridge is a footbridge linking Raigmore area with the Inverness Campus.

Officers have blocked the carriageway at the Raigmore interchange so traffic from the A96 and the A9 north cannot travel south on this route.

Police Scotland said: “The A9 between the Raigmore Interchange and Inshes is closed due to a road traffic incident.

“The Golden Bridge is also closed. Members of the public are asked to find alternative routes. Police were contacted around 7.10am this morning and remain on the scene.”

The footbridge was taped off and an officer was on duty at the Raigmore estate side.

Some police could be seen searching long grass on the embankment beside the footbridge leading up from the A9 to the Campus,

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 07:10 to attend an incident on the A9, Raigmore Interchange. An ambulance and paramedic response unit were dispatched to the scene.”

There was significant congestion on the A96, the southern distributor road (West Link), Culloden Road and Tower Road.
