A 23-year-old Inverness man who has amassed 49 previous convictions and attracted 17 custodial sentences with 15 more at liberty in the community was described as "a habitual offender" by a sheriff.

Stephen Dick, who previously stayed in Mackintosh Road before being sentenced to jail in Wick earlier this year, had admitted abusive or threatening behaviour at the Aldi store in Inshes, Inverness on August 13 this year.

Fiscal depute Adele Gray told Sheriff Robert Frazer that Dick had left the store but was approached by members of staff.

"He put a hand in his pocket and stated he had a gun, saying 'I will shoot you all.' He then left. He was arrested later that evening," she said.

Defence solicitor Marc Dickson told Inverness Sheriff Court: "He had been challenged about taking some alcohol from the shop and he panicked. There was no real perception by anyone that he had something."

Sheriff Frazer jailed Dick for six months, backdated to August 14 and added: "You were released from a prison sentence on June 27 and committed this offence on August 13. Non-custodial sentences are having no effect on you."
