A beggar was assaulted by his ex-partner as he sat in an Inverness city centre street looking for money.

Lorraine Beavis, of St Margaret's Road, Inverness approached Shaun Mackenzie in Church Street on the afternoon of September 18 this year, shouted and swore at him and called him a "scumbag" before kicking him on the side of the body.

Fiscal depute Adele Gray told Inverness Sheriff Court that Beavis left the scene but was traced and arrested by police who had been informed of the incident.

"She was arrested but while the officers were waiting for another unit to arrive, she tried to break free, struggled with an officer, scratching her, and kicking her on the shins. She was being continually abusive and continued to shout and swear after she was taken to Burnett Road Police Station.

"She was taken inside where she kicked out and attempted to fight with officers and threatened to bite the nose of one.

"She spat at them and made threats including: 'I will find out who you love and kill them'."

Sheriff Eilidh Macdonald said she would give Beavis, who admitted previous convictions for drunken disturbances, "one last chance to stay out of jail".

She added: "This was quite an aggressive display of behaviour and it was foul."

The sheriff placed Beavis under a year's social work supervision and warned her: "Make sure you comply."
