Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes has joined a chorus of critics following today’s front page of The National.

Ahead of tomorrow’s Euro 2024 final between England and Spain, the newspaper that supports an independent Scotland decided to publish this:

It has prompted thousands of comments on social media, with some describing it as embarrassing and others suggesting it has done ‘untold damage’.

Ms Forbes, who is an SNP MSP in the Highlands and has contributed columns printed in The National, after being asked about the front page said this evening: “Let me be crystal clear: I abhor offensive stereotypes. In sport, or out of sport. About English people, Scots or anybody else.

“Sporting rivalry should be friendly, good-humoured and fun. Anything else has no place in sport.”
