A petition asking the Scottish Government to make the A82 safer now has more than 1000 supporters.

Set up by the Inverness Courier, we are trying to persuade the government to include the route in its Strategic Transport Projects Review (STPR).

The review will outline the government’s priorities in major roads project over the next 20 years.

It has been dubbed the most dangerous in Scotland, after figures revealed that between January 2017 and summer 2019 there were 55 serious accidents and 18 deaths.

Supporting the campaign, road user Barbara Martin said: “Having travelled on this road countless times, I can say this road is a disgrace. When you drive this road your life is at risk.”

Petition supporter Stephen Trigg said: “My wife’s family were involved in a car accident over 40 years ago, in which her mother lost her life. The road has been a death threat for years and needs upgrading.”

Jason Thurston said: “The A82 is long overdue for an upgrade, the road is not fit for purpose in many parts, considering the amount of usage by HGV local public traffic and tourist traffic.”

This Sunday, work will start on an £80,000 project to improved road drainage and pavements on part of the A82 at Fort William.
