We strongly feel that our readers should have the opportunity to hear from and question the candidates to be our next First Minister.

Having secured the agreement of all of three leadership candidates to hold an open debate hosted by The Inverness Courier we can now share further details.

The event will feature all three candidates – Kate Forbes, Humza Yousaf, and Ash Regan – and the focus will be on the issues which are most important to our readers. We are sure that the dualling of the A9 and A96, maternity services in rural areas, and the delayed rollout of the R100 broadband project will feature.

We understand that the issues facing the north of Scotland are of critical importance to our readers, and we want to ensure that our communities have a powerful voice in shaping the future of our region. That's why we've worked hard to make this event happen and secure public access to the debate.

Logistics mean that we can’t accommodate all of our readers in person. We will therefore issue tickets on a first come first served basis to our digital subscribers. Details will be sent to digital subscribers in the coming days.

It’s important to us that all of our readers can watch and participate in the debate. That’s why we will live stream the debate on The Inverness Courier website, giving free access to everyone in Highlands, Moray and beyond. We encourage all readers to submit questions they would like us to put to the candidates by emailing debate@hnmedia.co.uk

The debate will take place at 7.30pm on March 17 at a location in Inverness. Moderator Nicky Marr will ensure that all of the issues which are most important to our readers are put to the candidates.

We promise to make the most of this opportunity and press the three candidates running to be Scotland's next First Minister on the critical issues affecting the Highlands and Moray.
