The president of the Highland and Islands Student Association (HISA) has said the Scottish Goverment must make it clear what they expect of universities and colleges during the lockdown.

In response to the news that the Scottish Government is now allowing some some students to return to their term-time accommodation – Florence Jansen HISA president said a lack of detail is causing 'unnecessary stress and anxiety' to staff and students.

The Scottish Government earlier today published guidance for students on their return to term-time accommodation.

In a briefing it said that if student attendance is critical and their education cannot be delivered remotely or postponed, or they have an placement, or for reasons of student well-being they can now return to their term time accommodation.

HISA President, Florence Jansen, welcomed the move, but said: "We still have some concerns that it is up to universities and colleges to decide what is happening with certain teaching aspects and whether to commit to delivering term two fully online.

"We believe government expectations should be made clear as constant changes throughout the year only cause unnecessary stress and anxiety for both our staff and students."

She continued: “HISA’s main priority throughout this pandemic has and always will be our students' welfare.

"It’s been a hard start to the year, but we appreciate the immense work of our student support staff in dealing with these changes as much as possible and we hope that together we will be able to preserve the standard of the student experience.”
