Hike in Himalayas in aid of Highland Hospice is delayed for a year
FUNDRAISERS who signed up to give a peak performance for Highland Hospice have more time to prepare for their challenge.
Thirteen people will help the charity via a Hike the Himalayas event which was originally set for October 10-20 this year, but has been rescheduled for the same dates in 2021 due to the pandemic.
Among those ready to go are Tesco Extra employees Liz Sutherland (55) and Susan MacRae (42).
Ms Sutherland said: “I did the Great Wall of China Challenge two years ago and it was a great experience, so when I heard they were organising this trip I decided to go for it.
“This is also a great cause and I am looking forward to it. I have known people at the hospice for a long time as we have worked with them a few times with Tesco for fundraising initiatives and I know we are doing this for a great cause.”
Ms MacRae said it would be her first time outside Europe and she was excited.
“It will probably be very challenging but I am really looking forward to it. The hospice does incredible work.
“My uncle and my cousin were both in care with them and they received amazing help, so it is wonderful to be able to give something back.”
The challenge begins at Dharamsala, the home of the Dalai Lama and the centre of the Tibetan Community, where the group will set off on a 30-mile trek over five days, reaching altitudes of 11,000ft.
Hospice fundraiser Katie Gibb said: “We have been in close consultation with organisers Global Adventure Challenges about the proposed challenge and all parties are agreed that next year is a far safer plan.”
“Obviously this is disappointing for all those who have been training and fundraising towards doing it in October – but it’s the way of the world at present and we are just delighted that they still have the opportunity to complete it next year.
“This is certainly not a challenge for the faint hearted but alongside the hard work involved in trekking at altitude comes a sense of camaraderie with fellow participants – and, hopefully, a great sense of achievement on completion. It will be a truly magnificent experience which will raise vital funds.”
