Highlands on alert for snow and gale force winds as Met Office issues weather warnings

The Met Office has issued the weather warning for the Highlands.

FORECASTERS have issued a weather warning for snow showers and gale force winds in the Highlands this week.

The Met Office Yellow warnings both kick in at midnight on Tuesday and run until 6am on Wednesday.

It warns of frequent snow showers and gusts to severe gale force on Tuesday, leading to travel disruption, particularly for higher routes.

The warning draws attention to the likelihood of:

Difficult driving conditions at times on higher routes.

Some bus, ferry, and possibly train services affected, with journeys either cancelled or taking longer.

Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges possible.

Some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves.

The Yellow warning for snow

Yellow warning of snow echoes those warnings.

There are three levels of weather warning with Yellow being the least severe. The others are Amber and Red.

It comes after one of the mildest New Year Days on record.
