Highland Council has said it is working with engineers to make a building damaged in an incident in Inverness last night safe.

Four people were injured when a black E220 Mercedes car hit the former William Hill bookmakers building on Grant Street at around 9.10pm last night.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident – three of the four people injured are described as being in a serious but not life threatening condition in hospital.

A Highland Council spokesman said: “Our staff are currently on site with structural engineers and options for making the building safe are being considered. Meanwhile the road and pavements will need to remain shut.”

Earlier, police issued an appeal for information.

A spokeswoman said: "Around 9.10pm, a Mercedes E220 collided with a building at the junction of Grant Street and Lochalsh Road. Emergency services attended and a 43-year-old woman and three men, aged 32, 38 and 42, were taken to Raigmore Hospital. The three men sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries.

"The building suffered extensive damage and the road remains closed whilst the building is structurally assessed."

Road policing sergeant Kate Park said: "Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the collision. I would ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash but has not yet spoken to police to come forward. I am particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have dash cam footage prior to the crash which could help with our investigation."
