An Inverness-born acoustic scientist has been presented with a British Empire Medal (BEM).

Professor Murray Campbell, who grew up in Strathpeffer, was recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours List earlier this year for services to his local community in Tweeddale and Edinburgh and to the Carlops Church.

The 82-year-old was recently presented with the medal by the Tweeddale Lord Lieutenant Catherine Maxwell-Stuart in a ceremony at Carlops Village Hall.

Those present included his wife, Patsy, and members of the Edinburgh Renaissance Band of which he is musical director.

In 1985, he founded the Musical Acoustics Research Group at the University of Edinburgh and in 2000 was appointed Professor of Musical Acoustics.

He is now Professor Emeritus and Senior Professorial Fellow at Edinburgh where he continues to carry out research on the acoustics of wind and stringed musical instruments.

Prevous awards include the Médaille Etrangère by the Societé Francais d'Acoustique in 2000, the Rossing Prize for Acoustics Education by the Acoustical Society of America in 2008, and the RWB Stephens Medal by the UK Institute of Acoustics in 2017.

For several decades, he has served Carlops Church in the voluntary roles of session clerk and organist.

The King’s Birthday Honours mark extraordinary contributions and achievements of people across the UK.
