KEY road bridges in the Highlands have been closed to high-sided vehicles amid a Met Office weather warning for stormy winds.

The closures affect the A87 Skye Bridge, and the Dornoch and Kessock Bridges on the A9.

The wind has also caused disruption to transport across the country.

As well as heavily impacting on CalMac services - including all of Tuesday’s Ullapool-Stornoway sailings, which are cancelled - the winds have seen a section of the A1 closed from the border near Berwick to just outside Dalkeith near the Edinburgh bypass.

Historic attractions have also been forced to close their doors. In the Highlands, Fort George was one such casualty, while the wider country also saw iconic sites like Iona Abbey and Edinburgh Castle lock down.

A yellow weather warning for high winds remains in force until 9pm on Tuesday.

A Met Office spokesman warned that “some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities” are likely to be affected by “spray and/or large waves”, and added that short term power loss was also possible in some areas.

Elsewhere, they were warning of transport disruption on roads, rail, air and sea.
