A RESCUE dog has celebrated his 20th birthday earlier this week – making him one of the oldest canines in Scotland.

Alfie, who is a jack russel-dachshund cross, was given a home by his owner Carol Smart (56) in Nairn when he was six years old.

Despite the average life expectancy for this type of dog, which ranges between 13 and 16 years, Alfie still has plenty of energy and was given a new badge by his own on New Year’s Day – his birthday.

Ms Smart said: “He is doing very well.

“He is still very active. He would jump on chairs and on the bed.

“Recently he has been very excited and has been running around the house as if he was just two years old!

“I got him at the local branch of the Scottish SPCA 14 years ago and I am his third owner – the previous families couldn’t cope with him barking, but he has improved a lot throughout the years.”

Alfie also celebrated glory last summer when he won three rosettes at a Nairnshire dog competition, including collecting first place as best dog in the veterans category at his first ever pet contest.
