Heavy and persistent rain forecast sparks yellow warning from Met Office for Inverness, Black Isle, Easter Ross, Loch Ness, Nairn, and Aviemore
A yellow weather warning for heavy and persistent rain has been issued for parts of the Highlands.
The alert, which covers an area that includes Inverness, Loch Ness, the Black Isle, Easter Ross, Nairn, and Aviemore, will come into force at 10pm tonight (Friday) and remain in force until 10am on Saturday.
The warning area also extends east across Moray and Aberdeenshire.
Up to 50mm is possible in some places, with 20-30mm expected “quite widely”.
A Met Office spokesperson said: “An area of heavy and quite persistent rain will develop across parts of north and northeast Scotland later on Friday evening, continuing overnight before turning showery on Saturday morning.
“Twenty to 30 mm is likely to fall quite widely in around 12 hours but perhaps with around 50 mm in a few areas.”
The warning comes amid five active flood alerts in northern and eastern Scotland. These alerts, which were issued by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) cover, Caithness and Sutherland; Easter Ross and the Great Glen; Wester Ross; the Findhorn, Nairn, Moray and Speyside catchment; and Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen.
