THE Jewish community and friends in Inverness are being invited to an event to mark one of the highlights of the religious calendar.

The Scottish Council of Jewish Communities (SCoJeC) is to host a celebration for Hanukkah – also spelled ‘Chanukah’ – the Festival of Lights.

The event will be held at the Shimca Centre, Ardconnel Terrace, Inverness from 4pm to 6.30pm on Monday.

The event will include activities and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy, including the retelling of the Hanukkah story, games and a kosher buffet.

It will be an open to the whole community to attend, whether Jewish or not, though there will also be an opportunity for Jewish people to talk about their experiences of being Jewish in Scotland, and contribute to a SCoJeC national inquiry into the subject.

Fiona Frank, SCoJeC’s projects and outreach manager, said: “The Scottish Council of Jewish Communities is excited to bring people together to celebrate the Jewish festival of Lights.

“We are hoping that at such a dark and cold time of year, this event will bring some light to the community in Inverness. At our first event in Inverness, held in 2011, one participant said she had felt like she was the only Jew in the area – now she tells us: ‘SCoJeC is my community!’”

The event is free but donations are welcome. Tickets can be booked online at www.trybooking.co.uk/ONK or by calling 07724 549817. Email events@scojec.org for further information.
