This year's Great Wilderness Challenge (GWC) has been cancelled, it has been announced.

The annual charity event was due to take place in Poolewe, in Wester Ross, but it will not go ahead due to uncertainty over Covid-19.

In a Facebook post a spokesman said: "Unfortunately due to the uncertainty surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic, we have regrettably decided to cancel the traditional Great Wilderness Challenge in Poolewe this year.

"In fairness to those who have already signed up, and everybody else intending to do so, we felt that an early decision was important.

"Social distancing, which is estimated to go on well into the autumn, makes the in-person event impossible once again, too dangerous for participants and the local community alike.

"In order to be able to help our charities, we have concluded that going virtual is the only viable alternative for this year. The GWC has been for over 30 years a regular source of revenue for our core charities, which all experienced a gaping hole in finances last year. This course of action means that with your help, we can continue our support to them this year.

"Therefore we extend this invitation to all recipients of this email to join us in this new venture. Basic feature of the virtual event is as follows: entrants choose their own route and location, whether walking, running, cycling etc., while observing Government Safety Guidelines applicable at the time of your challenge."
