The details behind the death of a teenager originally from Inverness will be shared with a Grand Jury in Texas.

Ben David Mackie (19), was shot at a house in Lake Jackson, Texas in the early hours of Friday morning and died of his injuries in hospital later that day.

In American court proceedings a Grand Jury, of 23 citizens, is used to accuse persons who may be guilty of a crime prior to a suspect being charged.

If the suspect is indicted, a full court case and trial will then take place.

Lake Jackson Police Department chief of police, Paul Kibodeaux, said Ben was shot at his home.

There had been earlier reports that the shooting occurred as part of a break-in but Mr Kibodeaux said there was no suggestion that anyone had entered the property uninvited.

He said: "The investigation is quickly progressing and should be concluded in the very near future with a presentation of facts of the case to the Grand Jury.

"So as not to taint or influence any witness testimony in the case, we are withholding detailed information in the case until it is prudent."

He added: "This incident did not involve a home invasion. Everyone present at the time of the incident either lived at the residence or was invited."

Mr Mackie had moved from Inverness to the USA with his family 11 years ago.
