A project aiming to capture the essence of the Highlands to boost tourism has recruited a graduate to delve into the region’s rich identity and story-telling tradition.

Sophie Gartshore, a recent history honours graduate of the University of Glasgow, will take on the role of data curation within the Spirit of the Highlands (SOTH) project, under the Scotgrad graduate placement scheme.

Ms Gartshore, who also holds an MSc in material culture and artefact studies, will research how data can best be captured from a variety of sources for the benefit of tourism. She will also manage stories collected through Inverness Castle’s Spirit: Autobiography A to Z, which allows people to contribute words encapsulating the spirit of the Highlands for them.

“I’m really excited to be involved in such an interesting project,” she said. “It is an excellent opportunity for me.

“I will be managing the database of stories that captures the spirit of the Highlands, shared by people who know and love this part of the world, and I’ll be linking the stories to the fantastic collections held in High Life Highland’s museum and galleries.”
