Your Highland Heroes campaign is back and there has never been a more important time to give thanks to our incredible local heroes!

The Covid pandemic has left no one untouched and in these most challenging of times there have been folk in all communities who have gone above and beyond to help their family, friends, neighbours – or even complete strangers – to get through it.

And we want to hear all about them! Who are the real superheroes in your community who have gone the extra mile – or miles?

There are 13 main categories:

  • Brave child
  • Volunteer
  • Charitable organisation
  • Fundraiser
  • Carer
  • Primary pupil
  • Primary teacher
  • Secondary pupil
  • Secondary teacher
  • Community champion
  • School of the year
  • Emergency services or armed forces hero
  • Public servant

Over the coming weeks, your favourite Highland News & Media (HNM) websites and newspapers will include special features about the categories along with all the details of how you can nominate individuals or organisations in your community.

Once all of your nominations have been submitted, our judging panel will create a shortlist which will then go before a public vote to choose the Highland Heroes 2022.

There is also a special award, hero of heroes, which will be chosen from the award winners and announced on the night of the awards ceremony. All of the awards will be presented at the glittering event at the Kingsmills Hotel, Inverness on Thursday, March 24.

The 2022 campaign is being sponsored by Inverness Airport. Inverness Airport general manager, Graeme Bell, said the airport was fully behind the Highland Heroes campaign once again: “With what has been a really hard 18 months we are really looking forward to seeing everyone embrace these awards and celebrate how people have done so much to help others.

“Everyone – in business and in the community – has been impacted by the Covid pandemic, and as we slowly get back to some normality it will be wonderful to see those people that have selflessly helped others, directly or through fundraising and other efforts, be recognised and celebrated.

“Inverness Airport is at the heart of the community and we know the pandemic has made life much harder for many people. The awards are a wonderful way to give heartfelt thanks to our selfless community heroes. I encourage everyone to show their support for their Highland Heroes and get nominating!”

HNM publishing director Steve Barron added: “We just can’t wait to recognise and celebrate all of the people who have gone to extraordinary lengths to help us through the most difficult of 18 months. There are so many heroes who go unacknowledged in society – we’ll do our very best to shine a spotlight on them and make sure they get the recognition they deserve.”

Nominations close on Friday, January 14.
