Flood warning ahead of snow thaw tonight
FORECASTERS are warning of localised flooding into tomorrow when the heavy snow which has hit the area begins to thaw overnight.
Three separate weather warnings - for snow, gales and rain - will also be in force today.
As well as a warning for further snow which remains in place until noon, Met Office forecasters have also issued alerts for more than 30 hours of gales and heavy rain - both of which come into effect this afternoon.
The warning for heavy rain begins at 4pm and will remain in force until 3am on Thursday.
"A band of heavy rain, preceded briefly by snow, will spread northeast across Scotland on Wednesday evening," said a Met Office spokesman. "This will introduce milder conditions which will lead to a thaw of lying snow. The public should be aware that the heavy rain, combined with the thaw of lying snow will bring a risk of localised flooding, standing water and spray leading to some difficult driving conditions."
The yellow alert for gales, meanwhile, begins at 3pm today and will remain in place until 11.50pm on Thursday night.
"A deepening area of low pressure is expected to track northeastwards, passing close to the extreme northwest of Scotland on Thursday," continued the Met Office forecaster. "To the south of this system, gales or severe gales are expected to develop. Gusts of 50-65 mph are likely quite widely through the warning area.
"The public should be aware of the risk of disruption to transport and possibly power supplies."
