HEAVY snow was this morning falling in Inverness as a yellow weather warning for the north and west of Scotland took effect.

Met Office forecasters are warning of frequent wintry showers all day Friday and into Saturday.

"Showers will feed into most of northern and western Scotland during Friday and at least the first part of Saturday," said a spokesman.

"Some of these showers will be heavy with a mixture of hail, sleet and snow.

"Snow accumulations are likely to mount up on hills, with around 10 to 15cm for some areas above 300m.

"Smaller accumulations are also expected to lower levels at times, away from immediate coasts, with localised falls of 2 to 6cm. Ice will be an additional hazard on untreated surfaces.

"The public should be aware of the risk of disruption to travel," they added.

Despite the arrival of more snow, there has so far been limited disruption. As of 9.30am no local schools were closed and rail services were running normally.

No major roads were reporting any problems either.
