Inverness public servant who dedicated decades of her life to the Highland community passes away; Janet Home MBE passed away at Raigmore Hospital; her funeral will take place on Tuesday

The funeral for a long-serving Inverness councillor and community stalwart will be held next week, it has been announced.

Janet Home MBE passed away in Raigmore Hospital on October 5 at the age of 87.

The community stalwart was a long-serving Inverness councillor and was involved in a host of local committees and organisations over many decades - including the police committee, Culcabock and Drakies Community Council, Highland Disability Sports and many more. She was also a founder member of Drakies Hall..

She was honoured with a retiral presentation in Inverness Town House just five years ago, when ill health led to her standing down from many of the local committees on which she had served for so long.

Her funeral will be held at William T Fraser and Son’s funeral home in Culduthel Road in Inverness at noon on Tuesday (October 15).

Announcing the funeral, a notice posted by the funeral directors said: “Ever so sadly on Saturday, October 5 at Raigmore Hospital, Janet Home M.B.E., 54 Old Perth Road, Inverness aged 87 years.

“Tireless Inverness Councillor, chairman of the Police Committee and founder member of Drakies Hall.

“Beloved wife of the late Michael, loving mother to Donnie, dear mother-in-law to Fiona, wonderful granny to Michael and Dawn, loved by Kerry and a great-grandmother of four month old Isabel.

“A legend in her lifetime, she touched the lives of many and will be sadly missed by them all. Funeral service on Tuesday 15th October at 12 Noon in the funeral home of William T Fraser and Son, Culduthel Road, Inverness. A warm welcome to all.

“Donations in memory of Janet for Macmillan Nurses can be made at the service or via the funeral directors.

“For those unable to attend, the service will stream live at www.williamtfraserandson.co.uk/live-stream.”

Tributes have flooded in for Janet following news of her passing.

Inverness South councillor Duncan Macpherson said: “She was a remarkable lady, a pillar of the Inverness community and an active campaigner in local council issues for many years and this continued long after her retirement from being a Highland councillor, she still attended full council meetings in the public gallery until Covid lockdowns, especially if there was an issue she was keen to address and get resolved.

“Offering deepest condolences to her family and her many friends, neighbours and colleagues at this sad time. May she rest in peace and rise in Glory.”

Inverness Millburn ward councillor Isabelle MacKenzie said: “Absolutely amazing person. Worked tirelessly over the years for the local community in Culcabock & Drakies area. Always learnt something new about Janet's life experiences when I met her. Condolences to family.”

Other Inverness residents were also full of praise for her dedication to the community and her long and tireless service.

Commenting on the funeral home notice confirming Janet’s sad passing, Dave Conner said: “So sorry to learn of Janet's passing. She did so much for Inverness and the Highlands, from Youth clubs to Police committee and Council, and especially for all she did for her beloved Drakies community. Sleep well, good lady - you made a difference and will not be forgotten.”

And Duncan Mccorquodale said: “A wonderful lady who I had so much respect for. Her dedication and hard work supporting her local community was truly remarkable.

“As a young lad growing up in Drakies back in the 1970s, she ran the local youth club, within Drakies Primary school. I wonder over the years how much of her own time she gave for others. Amazing. My sincere condolences to all Janet's family and friends.”

Lynz Tosh added: “Incredibly sad to read of Janet’s passing. There are not many people that won’t remember her name. She was so dedicated in everything she did for the good of our Drakies community & also outwith.”

And Jillian Walker said: “Very sad to hear this, Janet took me to Youth Club Darts Championships in Nottingham many, many moons ago. She was a great Ambassador for youth clubs & will be a big miss in the Highlands.”
