Former First Minister Alex Salmond has died at the age of 69 - the former SNP leader is best remembered as almost leading Scotland to independence in 2014.
Former First Minister Alex Salmond has died at the age of 69 following a hugely influential political career that saw him almost leading Scotland to independence in 2014.
Mr Salmond is survived by his wife of more than four decades, Moira McGlashan.
He was abroad in North Macedonia where he had been giving a speech this morning and it is reported that he collapsed a short time afterwards but details remain scant at this time.
His death comes shortly after the 10 year anniversary of the independence referendum on September 18, 2014 when he led Scotland to within 383,937 votes of becoming an independent country.
Mr Salmond had a storied political career that led from Westminster when the SNP were firmly in the political wilderness to the land to the highest office in Scotland as First Minister in 2007.
But in later years it also led him to the highest court in the land where he ultimately successfully defended himself against serious sexual charges and confirmed an investigation into his behaviour was “tainted by apparent bias”.
Latterly, he founded another pro-independence party Alba and was eyeing the 2026 Scottish Parliament elections to chart a route back into frontline politics and reassert the independence agenda.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer paid his respects saying: “For more than 30 years, Alex Salmond was a monumental figure of Scottish and UK politics. He leaves behind a lasting legacy.
“As First Minister of Scotland he cared deeply about Scotland's heritage, history, and culture, as well as the communities he represented as MP and MSP over many years of service.
“My thoughts are with those who knew him, his family, and his loved ones. On behalf of the UK government I offer them our condolences today.”
Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay said: “I am shocked and saddened to hear of Alex Salmond’s sudden passing.
“No matter our political beliefs, we can all respect his dedication to public service as an MSP, MP and First Minister of Scotland.
“He will be remembered as a formidable and impressive politician who made a lasting impact on our country.
“The thoughts of everyone in the Scottish Conservative Party are with his family and friends.”
Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Alex Cole-Hamilton said: “Alex Salmond was a substantial figure who left an undeniable impact on Scottish politics. Our thoughts are with Moira Salmond tonight.”
