Families in need in Inverness have been helped to enjoy some fresh air, fun and friendship, as well as receive much-needed practical support, thanks to a local charity.

Hilton Family Support (HFS) is a registered charity operating in the Hilton area of Inverness, where a number of families can struggle with issues of debt and social exclusion, as well as related issues such as low self-esteem and confidence.

HFS was set up to help support these families, providing a meeting place where local families can gather, operating a food bank when there is need, as well as helping out with supplies of nappies and emergency clothing.

It also runs a parent and toddler group and in partnership with Transforming Lives for Good, runs an early intervention mentoring programme in both Hilton and Cauldeen primary schools.

During the pandemic, the group has also been providing hot meals and weekly fruit baskets.

Chairman Barry Dennis said: “There are several group meetings where parents get to know one another and children can have a safe space to play. A hearty breakfast is always provided.

“Speakers are invited in to talk about relevant issues such as housing, further education, debt relief, basic cooking, music and play. Support can mean anything from helping families to move flats, to taking them to an appointment, to helping them access services and advice.”

However, the last few months have also reinforced the need to look after local families’ mental welfare.

“In recent times one of the major issues HFS is seeing is anxiety and depression,” Mr Dennis said.

“We recently took one group to the Abriachan Forest Trust where the staff led us in outdoor fun and activities which went down really well with parents and children alike.”

Parents described their Abriachan visit as being of huge significance in helping them emerge from a place of dark hopelessness.

It was also viewed as a great way of keeping the children occupied and giving them something to look forward to when funds were low.

One parent commented: “Going to Abriachan Forest Trust was a real adventure.

“The kids enjoyed being outdoors and loved the activities. They were taught to build a fire safely, make soup to cook over the fire. They were sifting for beasties in the stream.

“Not just the children, but it helped my mental health as well, by being outside and seeing everybody enjoying the activities. It was an amazing experience for us all.”
