Fly tipping near Culloden Battlefield being investigated by Highland Council and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA)
An investigation has been launched after fly tippers dumped rubbish near Culloden Battlefield.
It was left near the turnoff to Balloch on the B9006 at The Battlefield Bar and Restaurant.
Highland Council is aware of the incident and will work in conjunction with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) on its investigation.
• Inquiries ongoing to trace fly-tippers who dumped 300 tyres in Loch Ness
• Fly-tippers strike at scenic woodland near Inverness
Culloden Battlefield, which is the site of the last major battle on British soil in 1746, is visited by thousands of people each year.
A Highland Council spokesperson said: “We can confirm that our environmental health service is aware of this fly tipping and will liaise with SEPA on its investigation.”
The spokesperson said the public and landowners were encouraged to report cases of fly tipping via the council’s website at www.highland.gov.uk/report and where information was available at www.highland.gov.uk/info/litter and fly-tipping.
“The council investigates cases of fly tipping and will pursue formal action where that is an appropriate and proportionate response and, crucially, where sufficient evidence is available,” the spokesperson added.
“Often in cases evidence is not available to pursue formal action.
“The council welcomes the Scottish Government’s litter and fly tipping strategy and supports the objectives including the commitments to develop a more effective enforcement model and to improve guidance on enforcement approaches.”
