Up to three households will be able to celebrate Christmas together this year, it is understood.

That is according to information that leaked from the Cobra meeting involving the leaders of the devolved administrations that was chaired by Minister for the Cabinet Office Michael Gove.

Unconfirmed reports state that three households will be able to bubble together from December 23 to 27 while travel restrictions will also be relaxed.

The plans were approved by all four UK nations at a Cobra meeting this afternoon so the new rules will apply nationwide.

The five-day Christmas exemption will supersede the tier restrictions in place in Scotland, with a new system also coming into force in England.

Both Prime Minister Boris Johnson and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon in the last 24 hours tried to rein back expectations of a relaxation, citing the danger posed by Covid.
