A bed push around Raigmore Hospital is among the fundraising events taking place on Friday with the Highland Children’s Unit Appeal now just £50,000 shy of its target.

Organisations and individuals are also being urged to get involved in Final Push Friday – whether via a workplace bake sale or a school fancy dress day - with the £2 million goal now in sight.

Launched by the ARCHIE Foundation in conjunction with The Inverness Courier, the appeal is creating a more child-centred and family-focused children’s department at Raigmore Hospital. Work to redevelop and extend the hospital’s former ward 11 is ongoing and the new unit is set to open next month.

As well as Friday’s bed push, hospital staff are being invited to dress up as their favourite character from a children’s book.

The Eastgate Shopping Centre in Inverness, a long-time appeal supporter, has issued an invitation for businesses and organisations to take a one-hour slot to promote themselves while helping the appeal. The line-up will include a group of young musicians.

Messy-Ness, which provides art-based play for children aged six months to 10 years, will be at the centre’s ARCHIE Cafe, between 11am to 3pm. Donations will be invited.

A coffee morning and baking stall will be held at the Gordon Memorial Hall in Rosemarkie from 10.30am to noon. The event will also include a raffle.

Money is still coming in for the hospital’s special care baby unit, meanwhile, after two grateful mothers climbed Mount Kilimanjaro.

Nicola Douglas of Inverness and Nikki Bremner of Nairn, whose sons had a traumatic start to life, set themselves a goal of raising £10,000. But so far their efforts have raised about £21,000.
