New courses in further education are to be offered by a local boxing club after a major upgrade of its facilities.

Nairn Boxing Club (NBC) is based at the former public hall on the town’s High Street where head coach Kevin Brooks, a former army veteran, said it now boasted some of the best equipment in any gym in the country.

“The equipment is not only designed to help the boxers in competition but also help with boxers who are doing further education courses at the NBC,” he said.

“We have all worked incredibly hard at the club to upgrade the equipment in the main boxing area and our bespoke strength and conditioning area.

“We are about to roll out further education courses at the club and one of our guys has just started an 18-month practical and written educational sports development course at the club in partnership with a variety of organisations.

“We have free wi-fi at the club laptops and other tools that are available, so the whole course can be done at the club.

“This is an exciting new chapter that means we are now in a position to help our young adult members build up key skills that will lead to employment.

“We are incredibly proud of the fact we have everything in place to help our boxers thrive inside and outside of the boxing ring.”

He added: “In a post-lockdown environment many organisations and education providers are looking at alternative approaches to further education that empower youths and help them build up key skills that lead to employment.

“It’s great to see local careers advisers help Nairnshire youths access forward thinking courses such as the one we are running.”
